KAITLAN COLLINS (CNN WASHINGTON):
Good evening. We begin tonight with a historic announcement from the White House that’s sending shockwaves across Washington and the entire national security landscape. In a sweeping reorganization of the federal government, the President has signed an executive order officially merging the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security into a single, unified agency: the Department of Homeland Defense.

This bold move, aimed at streamlining operations and eliminating bureaucratic overlap, marks the largest structural change in the United States national security apparatus since the post-9/11 creation of DHS.

The new department, which will go by the initials DHD, is designed to provide a centralized command structure for both foreign and domestic security operations. According to administration officials, it will oversee everything from military operations and cyber defense to emergency response and border protection.

The President called the merger "a necessary evolution for modern threats," citing increased concerns over hybrid warfare, cyberattacks, and the need for faster coordination between agencies in times of crisis.

The newly appointed Secretary of Homeland Defense is expected to be announced within the next 24 hours, and sources tell CNN the list includes high-ranking officials from both former departments.

Critics, however, warn the consolidation could create oversight challenges and spark legal and logistical hurdles, especially when it comes to the balance of civil liberties and military authority within U.S. borders.

The Department of Homeland Defense is scheduled to be operational within the next 90 days, with transition teams already in place to ensure continuity of operations.

We'll have much more on this throughout the evening, including analysis from former defense officials and lawmakers on Capitol Hill. For now, one thing is clear—America’s security structure just entered a new era.

Live in Washington, I’m Kaitlan Collins. Back to you.
