KAITLAN COLLINS (CNN WASHINGTON):
Good evening. Another major shake-up out of Washington tonight as the administration announces a second sweeping federal reorganization in as many weeks. In a press conference earlier this afternoon, the President revealed the merger of the Department of Commerce and the Department of Labor, forming a new cabinet-level agency titled the Department of Economic Affairs.
Officials say the move is aimed at modernizing the government’s economic strategy for the 21st century by combining workforce development, business innovation, trade, and labor protections under one roof.
The Department of Economic Affairs—referred to as the DEA—will oversee everything from job training programs and workplace regulations to trade negotiations, small business support, and economic data collection. The White House is calling this a "one-stop shop for American prosperity."
The merger is expected to streamline overlapping missions, reduce bureaucratic gridlock, and better align policy across sectors impacted by rapid technological change, automation, and global competition.

"For too long, the left hand hasn’t known what the right hand was doing when it comes to jobs and business. Today, that ends," said the President.
But the move is already drawing concern from labor unions and small business advocates. Critics worry that collapsing the agencies could dilute labor protections or make it harder for workers to have their voices heard in the halls of power.

Meanwhile, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are pressing for details. Some are calling for immediate hearings to oversee the transition process and ensure no essential services are lost in the shuffle.
A transitional leadership team has been appointed, and a nominee for Secretary of Economic Affairs is expected within the week.
This marks the second major cabinet-level reorganization this month, coming just days after the formation of the Department of Homeland Defense. Together, they reflect the administration’s bold effort to reshape how the federal government meets the demands of a rapidly changing world.
We’ll have full coverage and expert analysis coming up, including reaction from labor groups, the Chamber of Commerce, and former officials from both departments.
